Prewriting skills are the foundational abilities that help preschoolers develop the fine motor control and coordination needed for writing. With this age group we work on fine motor strength, as they participate in activities like squeezing playdough, using tongs, or tearing paper to strengthen those small hand muscles. Another key component is working on hand-eye coordination by tracing shapes, threading beads, and working with puzzles to improve visual-motor connections. We also use fine motor journals to work on controlled movement by practicing lines, curves, and scribbles as this aides children gain control over their writing tools.
