Separation anxiety at drop-off is a normal part of early childhood—especially for infants, toddlers, and even some preschoolers. It doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong (or that your child won’t have a great day). At EduCare Learning Center in Joliet, we see this often, and we know that warm, predictable routines help children feel safe. The goal isn’t to “stop the tears” instantly—it’s to build trust so your child learns: grown-ups come back.

Here are a few gentle goodbyes that tend to work well:

  • Keep it short and consistent: A quick hug, a simple phrase (“I’ll be back after snack”), and then go.

  • Stay calm and confident: Children notice your tone. A steady goodbye helps them feel secure.

  • Be on time for pick-up: Aim to always arrive on time to pick-up your preschooler. Children have internal clocks and being late can rekindle anxiety and in turn worsen any drop-off separation.

  • Partner with your teacher: Let us know what helps at home—we’ll use those cues and offer a comforting hand-off.

If your child cries, that doesn’t mean the day is ruined. Most children settle shortly after you leave, especially when we redirect them into a favorite activity and offer plenty of connection. If you’re worried, talk with your child’s teacher—we’re here to support your family with patience, communication, and lots of loving reassurance.
